John Maxtone-Graham

Author, Lecturer and Maritime Historian

John Maxtone-Graham was born in New Jersey in 1929 of a Scots father and American mother. Three months later, a cataclysmic crash of the stock market precipitated a familial move to London. That first Atlantic crossing, at the age of six months, eastbound aboard Minnewaska, was the first of hundreds to follow. He attended schools on both sides of the Atlantic, Fessenden and Tabor here, Windlesham and Sedbergh over there and finally, Brown University, class of 1951. After graduation, he was drafted into the United States Marine Corps, endured Parris Island, then officer's training at Quantico and a year in the Korean trenches as an infantry platoon leader. Demobilized, he became a Broadway stage manager for, among others, Helen Hayes, Sir John Gielgud, Orson Welles, Tallulah Bankhead and the Lunts. Perhaps his most pyrotechnical employment was stage managing Tennessee Williams's The Night of the Iguana with Bette Davis and Margaret Leighton.

In 1972, his first book was published by Macmillan; The Only Way to Cross became the bible of the ship buffs, still in print after 35 years. Other books followed: Dark Brown is the River, a biographical novel, Liners to the Sun, about cruise ships, Safe Return Doubtful, documenting polar exploration, many company histories and Cunard: 150 Glorious Years. Crossing & Cruising was published in September 1992, Titanic Survivor in 1997 and Cruise Savvy debuted with the millennium. A mammoth book—Queen Mary 2—celebrated the arrival of the newest Cunarder.

He started lecturing aboard France in 1972 and, ever since, has continued lecturing to passengers all over the world, spending more than half his year aboard vessels that include Constellation, Summit, Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2, Norway, Rotterdam, Sagafjord, Sea Goddess, Seabourn Pride and all Princess, Royal Viking, Norwegian Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises tonnage. Ashore, he lectures at New York's Metropolitan Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Geographic Society, the Four Arts Society of Palm Beach and also at Britain’s National Maritime Museum. Maxtone-Graham has four grown children; he and his second wife, Mary, live in the bottom half of a brownstone within comforting earshot of the piers.

Whenever television producers need advice about ocean liner history, he is in demand, whether on Dick Cavett, Mike Douglas, The Today Show, PBS’s American Experience and a variety of History and Discovery Channel programs. Moreover, if a passenger vessel is in the news, the Times, Newsweek, CNN, CBS, NBC and ABC start ringing his telephone.

Currently (2007), Maxtone-Graham has just completed a book for Norton devoted to his favorite ocean liner, Normandie.

"All Aboard with the Maxtone-Grahams" Program

Each year the Maxtone-Grahams offer one or more very special cruises that offer a unique opportunity for a limited number of people to get to know the Maxtone-Grahams aboard ship featuring private lectures, a private land tour and many special events for participants in the All Aboard with the Maxtone-Grahams (AAMG) program.

Other passengers on board the cruise will not know about these private functions and are not permitted to attend. Each program is unique and you can only reserve your space in this program thru GalaxSea Cruises of San Diego - the exclusive agents for this very special program which includes:

Letter from John Maxtone-Graham

January 2007

Dear Friends

My wife Mary and I spend more than half our year afloat, lecturing to delighted passengers all over the world. Many among my shipboard audiences ask if they can be advised of future cruises so that they can book cabins specifically to sail with us again.

Thanks to John and Rosemary Roberts of GalaxSea Cruises & Tours, that wish can now be formally implemented. Participation in an All Aboard with the Maxtone-Grahams group will include not only my regular lectures offered to all passengers but, in addition, some private talks, agreeable dinner table conversation and, where appropriate, a group excursion ashore.

Do please note that to enroll within the group and participate in our planned activities, you are obliged to reserve your shipboard accommodations through John & Rosemary Roberts at GalaxSea Cruise in San Diego, my exclusive agent for this exciting new venture.

For those of you who know and enjoy my talks and books, I cannot urge you too strongly to embark with us yet again for voyages of infinite delight, gentle erudition and endearing companionship.

Tugs are under the bow, the whistle is blowing, gangways are being withdrawn and railings are lined with excited fellow passengers. Don’t miss this very special boat!

Cordially,
John Maxtone-Graham

Cruise Ship Information

Celebrity's Constellation

Many of our cruises are offered on Celebrity's top of the line premium class ships (Constellation, Infinity, Summit & Millennium). These 91,000 ton $350 million ships are larger than many new ships today but holds only about 2000 passengers. Compare this to the larger Grand Princess which is 109,000 tons but holds 3100 people. They are some of the roomiest new ships afloat except for the luxury class ships. Berlitz & Conde Nast Traveler readers rates these ships as the top large cruise ships (over 1000 passengers) and we agree! They set the standard for premium class cruising.

The Ocean Liners restaurant is the specialty restaurant on board the Constellation which sets a new standard for dining at sea. This remarkable restaurant owes much of its ambience to Maxtone-Graham, who was Celebrity's maritime consultant for all four of the Millennium-class specialty restaurants. Each offers an outstanding 5-star dining experience with highly skilled and knowledgeable staff to make this 3 hour dining experience a meal to remember. It is one of our favorite restaurants anywhere. The restaurant seats 130 guests and has a demonstration galley, along with a dine-in wine cellar. We expect it to be a dining highlight of your cruise. There is a small $30 per person service charge for the restaurant to cover staff gratuities - the food is included in your cruise fare. The Millennium's specialty restaurant is called the Olympic, the sister ship of the Titanic and includes wood paneling from the Olympic preserved after her retirement. An interesting fact is that there is an entrance area outside each of the restaurants with interesting artifacts and each has a continuously running video-tape proudly featuring John Maxtone-Graham talking about these wonderful restaurants and their historical background. I always enjoy listing to the tapes.

Each of the dining areas onboard– the "specialty restaurant", the stunning main dining room, the "Seaside Café" and "Seaside Grill" – feature the top rated cuisine of all premium class vessels. They also offer an excellent sushi bar, and healthy spa cuisine, and custom made pizzas.

These ships offer a number of interesting features and amenities, several of them industry firsts:

In addition to its new public spaces and amenities, there is also the highly-acclaimed, fleetwide signature elements, including museum-quality contemporary art collections, Cova Café di Milano (where we have informal get togethers on some days), Michael’s Club piano lounge, a cinema, internet cafe, and Martini and Champagne Bars serving caviar and other delicacies.
