OUR FAMILY VACATION
For my family it was just a year ago for one week to Mexico on Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas. Even though we had seen Mexico before, our toddlers who were Calvin (3) and Talia (2) enjoyed every minute of it. Each morning Calvin and Talia would wake up amazed they were on a cruise ship. Calvin would go over to the balcony window to peer outside to see if anything passed by and couldn’t wait to tell us by jumping up and down
and yelling to wake up. I hope no one was bothered by our enthusiastic 3- year old but we didn’t hear any complaints. The ship is well insulated between cabin decks.

Going through the breakfast line was fun. He wanted to try everything that looked appealing to a 3-year old which meant cereal and fruit of all sorts. Cheerios and yogurt became a popular favorite for breakfast. My husband wanted his Eggs Benedict each morning before we could muster him to go anywhere on the ship. After breakfast and looking at the daily newsletter, we went to the children’s facilities for an hour of play. Calvin was not quite fully potty trained to join the program. But they had structured and free play with the counselors. We watch while it all happened and the kids had a great time.

Throughout the week, we watched belly flop contests, ice sculpture carving demonstrations, enjoyed the nightly shows, or even just sat around our balcony as the waves crashed into each other. A couple of nights into the cruise, we asked for a babysitter to watch the kids in our room while we had a night out to dine at one of the specialty restaurant- we opt for steak house. Food was delicious and we enjoyed each other’s company without kids for a night. Just the two of us having a night to ourselves was divine! The babysitter was attentive and let us knows if there were any issues.

It was Calvin’s birthday on the cruise. He carried the present as his carry-on luggage. He couldn’t wait to open it. When it was time to open it, he found a remote controlled Thomas the train. Everywhere we went, Calvin had his remote train car. The waiters at our dinner table made the dessert extra special for his birthday. His face lit up and it was a Kodak moment.

Mexico was hot and humid during September. The kids were hot and droopy while we wandered Mexico for souvenirs. It was too hot to think about anything else but get back to the ship as fast as we could. Finally in Puerto Vallarta- last port of call that it cooled down to wander around the shops.
Even after chasing two toddlers at some point during the cruise, we had a blast! It was worth every penny to spend time together as a family. We didn’t have to say good-bye to Daddy when he left to work each day. It was what we can do with Daddy today.

Going on a cruise to us meant bringing the family closer together. We watched our two toddlers’ world expand and curiosity grow - have 2000 pictures to prove it. The destination wasn’t as important as seeing our kids enjoy being on a cruise ship and discovering something new each day. Cruising was the perfect choice for our family vacation. We can’t wait till the next family cruise and we’ll take the grandparents this time; it will definitely be on Royal Caribbean- maybe the Oasis or Allure of the Seas with the Boardwalk and Central Park.

When was your last vacation as a family? Let us know how it went and we’ll post it on our GalaxSea Cruises & Tours Facebook page.
