Alaska is one of the few places on earth where you can witness brown bears in their natural habitat, and a cruise is one of the best ways to get there. With over 30,000 brown bears roaming Alaska — the largest concentration in North America — your chances of a sighting are excellent if you know where to look.

Why Alaska Cruises Are Perfect for Bear Viewing

Most Alaska cruises sail the Inside Passage, a stunning network of fjords, islands, and coastal waterways stretching from Washington State to Southcentral Alaska. This route puts you within striking distance of some of the best bear viewing destinations in the world. Many shore excursions are specifically designed around wildlife viewing, making it easy to add a bear encounter to your cruise itinerary.

Best Locations to See Brown Bears

Katmai National Park is widely considered the premier brown bear destination in Alaska. Famous for Brooks Falls, where bears gather each summer to catch sockeye salmon mid-leap, Katmai offers an almost guaranteed sighting during peak season from July through September. While not directly on the Inside Passage, many cruise passengers fly in from Anchorage or Homer for a day excursion.

Kodiak Island is home to the Kodiak brown bear — a subspecies and one of the largest bears in the world. Some Alaska cruises include Kodiak as a port of call, and guided wildlife tours are readily available.

Anan Wildlife Observatory near Wrangell is one of Alaska's best kept secrets. This Forest Service site allows small groups to observe black and brown bears fishing for pink salmon from a covered observatory platform. Wrangell is a port of call on many Inside Passage itineraries.

Pack Creek on Admiralty Island near Juneau is another premier viewing site. Accessible by floatplane or kayak, Pack Creek is home to one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in Alaska and is managed jointly by the US Forest Service and Alaska State Parks.

Best Time to Visit

July through September is peak season when bears are actively fishing for salmon — making sightings almost certain. Early season bears in May and June are often spotted foraging on hillsides for fresh vegetation.
